Quick observation: It’s fascinating to me how many startups begin with purple as their brand colour, and then invariably move away from it. Purple is cool! But maybe it’s one of the colours people can’t/don’t/won’t take seriously?
As an example, Heroku when it first launched was full on purple, now they are swinging over toward blue. Blue is a very confident and dependable colour, but not as fun as purple!
Purple is one of my favourite colours primarily because there are so many variants of it, and it evokes a sense of fun and adventure. Historically this was a royal colour and hard to reproduce, and could not be worn or used by the average person.
Last year there was a good discussion on Reddit here
Some points from that article:
- Purple is easy on the eyes
- Purple is a very flexible colour
- “But purple? Purple checks all the boxes: Trustworthy, soothing, and futuristic at the same time.”
- Purple is the colour of luxury
- and my favourite “Purple is the new blue”
This restriction has been removed, Purple is for everyone, but maybe some stigma remains?
What do you think?
