My Notes from the Talk
Steve Arnold took to the front of the room faced with a packed house full of UXers on the edge of their seats. What a great talk, and Steve you had the patience of a saint and the style and wit of a very humble person with a great scientific method for reviewing and investigating AI.
Steve started with AI chatbots but didn’t stay there long, moving on to all the different AI tools out there and how to use them to level up your UX practice.
I came away from the talk feeling energised about AI. It’s easy to be intimidated by the topic as a whole (“AI is coming to eat your lunch!”) but when you break it down, it’s just another tool. Albeit a powerful one, capable of combining workflows to speed up how we work as designers.
My scribbled iPhone notes are below for you to descipher.

You made this talk an enjoyable one. Not sure if you know it or not, but it was a career altering moment for me. Keep experimenting with AI – like any revolution it starts with a bug noise and then the long tail of discovery begins.
Talk Details
This talk and discussion is for UX designers, researchers, product creatives or anyone who is feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, or curious about AI’s growing role, and wants to understand how to stay relevant, add value, and actively shape AI-powered experiences with confidence and purpose.
Steve will touch on 4 topics with his thoughts. But we will have some of the best designers in NZ in the room. It would be nice to share our experiences and ideas. As a community, how might we learn from each other and solve for this together?
AI in Our Toolbox – (AI for UX) An overview of how we are using AI now.“How is AI showing up in your design workflow right now – are you using it, avoiding it, curious? What’s holding you back?”
Designing for AI – (UX for AI) An overview of toolkits and frameworks,
“Designing for probabilistic outcomes vs deterministic outcomes. How do our skills shift?”
Staying Human – Thoughts on how do we stay not just in the loop, but in the relationship with the user?
“What does it mean to preserve trust, clarity, and empathy in AI experiences?”
Deigning our Future – Thoughts on competencies and literacy
“What new skills, mindsets, or practices can help not just survive but thrive?”We may not get all the answers, but let’s start the conversation!
